The set was ordered both out of curiosity and for a practical purpose. Having found myself in a situation several times when I had to spend a long time and sadly sawing the shackle of a padlock with a hacksaw because of a lost key, I wanted to learn how to open a lock in such situations in a faster and less labor-intensive way.

I know that this topic will undoubtedly cause a discussion about the legality of using the described devices, I want to note that the review is written for informational purposes only, since I believe that such items are also applicable for good, it all depends on who uses them and with what intentions.

The lock picking kit includes a set of master keys in a case and a transparent lock with two keys.

The complete lock belongs to the type of the most common cheap Chinese padlock cylinder locks. Such locks are usually used in our country to lock various insignificant doors and drawers, and it is to them that keys are often lost.

By the way, it is funny that the Chinese hung a keychain with keys on the lock shackle, as if hinting at the need to use the supplied set of tools. But I still decided to go sequentially, and first demonstrate how a padlock pin lock is arranged and what happens when the lock is opened with a key, fortunately, the transparent case allows this.

So, the main functional parts of the padlock are: the cylinder where the key is inserted ( 1 ), spring-loaded pins ( 2 ) blocking the rotation of the cylinder, the pin locking the lock shackle ( 3 ) and the shackle itself ( 4 ) 


When the key is inserted into the cylinder hole, the projections on the key blade push the pins and the cylinder can rotate:

This photo also shows that out of 7 pins, the key pushes only six, and the seventh pin acts as a stop.

It is logical that the more pins the key pushes, the more difficult it is to open the lock using special tools, since each pin must be pushed separately, and blindly, because in real life, locks are not transparent.

To open the locks, the set includes 12 master keys and 2 levers for turning the cylinder and a spacer:

Since the set itself is educational and demonstrational, the master keys are not of high quality, which is expected in principle. This is indicated by both the crimping of the rivets and the quality of the metal itself.

The blades are about 0.6 mm thick, and the metal itself feels quite fragile, so you need to use the tool carefully so as not to break it.

The set includes a pick, almost completely repeating the shape of the key protrusions. I will use it to demonstrate the principle of opening the lock. In addition to the pick itself, you will also need a lever to turn the cylinder.

The pick is inserted into the keyhole in such a way that its protrusions lift the pins to the line of rotation of the cylinder.
